In contrast, grain, silage, and pasture do not offer the same benefits as hay during winter. Grain may be provided as a supplement but should not be the primary feed, as it can lead to digestive upset if fed in excess without adequate roughage. Silage is a less common option and may not be suitable for all horses, especially since it can have higher moisture content and is typically used for ruminants rather than equines. Pasture is not available during winter, making hay the most reliable and essential feed during this season.
